about

The first of the two covers on the album, ‘Imam’ was composed by South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand). Along with Hugh Masekela, Ibrahim is one of my favorite artists to emerge from SA and brought so much conviction and social commentary to his largely instrumental compositions. This is one I’ve always had fun playing and wanted to make sure it was part of the record as it does really capture the spirit of the clubnites – fun, funky and full of musicality. Nate Smith on drums and Tim Lefebvre on bass set the whole track up from the first note. Duane Eubanks drops another heavy trumpet solo and I get to play some more piano before flipping the proceedings with more live remixing…
